Turkish police hold 17 for al-Qaeda links

Turkish police conducting raids in four different provinces detained 17 people for suspected links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network, Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday. The operation began Tuesday in the Central Anatolian province of Konya and was continued in three other provinces, the agency said.In January, 120 suspects were detained in a massive dawn sweep across the country.Law enforcement officers have regularly targeted al-Qaeda since the group was blamed for a series of deadly bombings in Istanbul in November 2003.A Turkish cell of Al-Qaeda was held responsible for four truck-bomb attacks on two synagogues, the British consulate and a British bank in Istanbul in the 2003 attacks that killed 63 people, including the British consul, and left hundreds injured.Seven men were jailed for life in 2007 over the bombings, among them a Syrian national who was convicted of masterminding and financing the attacks.Hürriyet
