Turkish Red Crescent tent city

The Turkish Red Crescent, or Kızılay’s, crew aiding quake victims in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince briefed President Rene Préval about their operations in the field.Team leader Kemal Pelivanlı gave details of the planned tent city as well as current aid deliveries and psychosocial support efforts.Kızılay is planning to build a tent city in the Tabarre district in order to shelter hundreds of earthquake survivors and provide them with aid supplies in a more efficient way.President Preval expressed his satisfaction and thanked Turkey for the ongoing efforts. Following the meeting, Preval posed in a photo with the Kızılay crew and Turkish policemen on duty under the umbrella of the United Nations.Turkey has also experienced massive earthquakes that have left tens of thousands dead and homeless in the past. Kızılay initially sent two crews to make preparations and determine the operation plan after the 7.0 magnitude quake hit Haiti on Jan. 12. Later, five cargo planes carrying 50 tons of aid material as well as medical personnel and search-and-rescue teams headed to the Caribbean island. Turkey also provided financial aid of $1 million dollars to Haiti. The death toll is feared to exceed 400,000 while survivors are suffering from lack of food, water and medical supplies. The security problem makes aid delivery difficult and volunteer groups have to work under the protection of U.N. peacekeepers.Hurriyet
